How to clarify your positioning with AI
Create a positioning brief that connects a specific buyer, their alternatives, and your evidence.
Agency Script Editorial · Updated
The problem to solve
A company can list many capabilities and still struggle to explain why someone should choose it. Positioning becomes clearer when the team agrees on the buyer, the problem, and the meaningful alternative.
Compare against the real alternative
The alternative may be a spreadsheet, an internal employee, or leaving the problem unsolved. Name what the buyer does today and what becomes difficult as their workload grows. This produces a more useful comparison than assuming every prospect is evaluating the same software vendors. Distinguish a feature difference from a benefit the buyer actually values.
Keep untested positioning provisional
AI can synthesize notes, but customer preference still needs evidence. Mark claims based on a single conversation as tentative. Test whether prospects understand the proposed promise and whether it describes a problem they recognize. Keep the approved positioning brief short enough for sales, content, and product teams to use in their next decisions.

Cove Operations: positioning draft
Fictional operations service. This is a positioning hypothesis, not validated market research.
Illustrative worked example created for this guide. Fictional business and inputs; not a customer result or a verified product execution.
| Decision | Working position | Evidence still needed |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer | Small service teams with repeated project handoff problems. | More interviews across different team sizes. |
| Alternative | Email threads and separate checklists. | Confirm actual tools used in recent deals. |
| Promise | A clearer owner and next step for each handoff. | Document an approved delivery example. |
What to verify before using the result
- Interview synthesis is not market validation by itself.
- Differentiation claims need current supporting evidence.
