How to plan a welcome email sequence with AI
Create a welcome sequence that helps new customers reach their first useful result.
Agency Script Editorial · Updated
The problem to solve
New customers rarely need every feature explained at once. A welcome sequence should help them complete the next useful action and recognize when they have succeeded.
Plan around progress
Define the first result the customer can achieve with the product. Work backward to identify the information and action needed before that result. This produces a sequence based on progress rather than an arbitrary series of daily emails. Someone who has already completed a step should not keep receiving reminders to do it.
Define the operational conditions
A sequence needs entry, exit, and suppression rules as well as copy. Specify what event would indicate success and what should happen when someone asks for help. Check whether those events exist in the delivery system. If the business cannot observe the milestone, mark the automation as requiring instrumentation rather than pretending the sequence is ready to run.
How Agency Script helps
Agency Script’s lifecycle email skill helps connect message purposes to customer stages. The plan can become a reviewed implementation brief for the email platform you use.
Start with a short request and your source material. The paid guide includes the copyable starter, what to provide, and how to review the result on web or desktop.

Welcome path for a fictional reporting product
Fictional onboarding plan. Event names describe intended behavior; implementation must verify availability.
Illustrative worked example created for this guide. Fictional business and inputs; not a customer result or a verified product execution.
| Customer state | Message purpose | Stop or change when |
|---|---|---|
| Account created | Help the customer choose a reporting goal. | The goal is selected. |
| Data source connected | Show how to review the first draft report. | The customer completes the review. |
| First report approved | Explain how to reuse the reporting setup. | The customer requests help or leaves the sequence. |
What to verify before using the result
- The delivery platform must support the proposed triggers and suppression rules.
- A sequence plan does not activate automation.
